U2 BASSIST Adam Clayton left the limelight on stage during the band's 360 Tour of the US to bask in the glow of a mystery brunette.

The enigmatic and normally reticent member of the rock band took a brief break from their gruelling tour schedule to relax on a lounger on a beach in Miami with a tanned, dark-haired lady.

The 51-year-old and his friend attracted little attention as they smiled, joked and shared a kiss under the beach umbrella.

Just last year, it was revealed Clayton had become a first-time dad to a son -- with both the child and the mother's name not disclosed.

Among the scarce details that emerged were that the lady was reputedly French, aristocratic, independently wealthy and a brunette.

The bassist has been engaged twice, with his six-month relationship with high-profile supermodel Naomi Campbell apparently coming to an end in the early 1990s because he couldn't put up with the relentless attention.

Several years later Clayton and long-term girlfriend Suzanne Smith, a former PA to U2 manager Paul McGuinness, announced their engagement in 2006 but then broke up in 2007.
