The band's visit was one of the most hotly-anticipated events in the Turkish cultural calendar.

And U2 certainly made the most of their short visit to Istanbul.

Bono packed in a meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogen, a wild night of partying and a hike across Istanbul's Bosphorus bridge, all before playing a concert in the city on Monday night.

Ahead of the gig, U2's first ever in Istanbul, Bono talked about the importance of the bridge, which connects Asia and Europe.

'Last September I was asking, what would be the most inspiring thing about Istanbul? And I said you know it is the bridge between the east and the west. It is the bridge between Europe and Asia, it is the bridge between the secular and religious. It is very important.,' he said.

During his meeting with Erdogen, the Irish singer, 50, presented the Prime Minister with an iPod from his Red Campiagn and also met with his daughter, Sumeyye Erdogan.

That evening Bono, along with wife Ali Hewson and The Edge, enjoyed a raucous night out at Reina Bar, which is located on the European side of the Bosphorus bridge.

The glamorous Istanbul club is popular with Turkish celebrities, models and millionaires.

Bono was photographed with his hands full of drinks and looking on as a dancer performed behind him, while the Edge inhaled from appeared to be a hookah pipe.

But the rockers didn't seem to be any the worse for wear following their night out as on Monday evening they performed a two-hour set to a 50000 fans at Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic stadium as part of their 360 Degree Tour.

In May, Bono underwent emergency surgery on his back in Germany, which forced U2 to cancel the North American leg of their tour as well as their headlining spot at Glastonbury.

His first live appearance post-surgery was in Turin in August.
