Yes we can still break into a smile

The Independent,

Amid all the gloom, we remain a resilient nation. The weekend just gone and the week just coming show how we can, temporarily at least, put the economic gloom in some perspective.

Thousands of people bare their souls on the heavenly path to the top of Croagh Patrick in an extraordinary display of traditional faith and hope. Modern Ireland may have cast aside many of the outward manifestations of religion but there remains a huge core of belief and ritual that defy the circumstances. Long may it continue.

Faith of a different hue will amble around Galway from today as the festival both revives memories of the great old days and stirs hope of a return of fortunes either on the track or in the broader economy. We should not underestimate the effect of such events on the national mood and outlook. Not to mention the considerable uplift a victory can have on a county. Waterford today must be a wonderful place to be after that sensational comeback yesterday. The grace with which Galway acknowledged Waterford's victory speaks volumes for true sportsmanship in the depths of defeat. There is a lesson in it for all of us.

And there is hope, when as many as 240,000 people can cast aside their woes for a few hours in the presence of our home-produced world conquerors, U2, fittingly singing their hearts out in the symbolic cradle of Croke Park. Yes these are tough times. But it is still summer; we still have much to offer at home and abroad. We can still enjoy our sport and our festivals. We can still smile. We can still welcome friends and visitors. Yes we can.
