Rita, one of the other writers for U2station (and a dear friend) has helped introduce me to many causes, organizations, and ideas of which I was hardly familiar with. Bono, Edge and Ali have supported or even helped develop many of these programs. One.org is probably the most familiar to even non-U2 fans, but non-the-less I am generally surprised how many people have never heard of it. So in short this is:
The DL on some important life altering organizations!
ONE
www.one.org
WHO ARE WE
ONE is a grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Cofounded by Bono and other campaigners, ONE is nonpartisan and works closely with African policy makers and activists.
WHAT WE DO
At ONE, we achieve change through advocacy. We hold world leaders to account for the commitments they've made to fight extreme poverty, and we campaign for better development policies, more effective aid and trade reform. We also support greater democracy, accountability and transparency to ensure policies to beat poverty are implemented effectively.
HOW WE WORK
ONE works closely with policy experts, African leaders, and anti-poverty activists to mobilize public opinion in support of tested and proven methods for tackling poverty. At ONE, we believe the fight against poverty is not about charity, but about justice and equality.
RED
www.joinred.com
(RED) IS NOT A CHARITY, (RED) IS NOT A CAUSE, (RED) IS NOT A THEORY, (RED) is a simple idea that transforms our incredible collective power as consumers into financial force to help others in need. (RED) is where desire meets virtue.
Every time you choose to buy a (RED) product or service, at no extra cost to you, the company who makes that product will give up to fifty-percent of its profit to buy and distribute antiretroviral medicine to our brothers and sisters dying of AIDS in Africa.
To see more on this visit the website and there you can also see the (RED) products and where to get (RED) items.

DATA

Previously stood alone. Now it is combined with one.org.
MUSIC RISING
www.musicrising.org
I wrote about this in a previous blog but for those who want it to be simple here:
Music Rising is a campaign that was launched to rescue the musical culture of the Central Gulf region of the United States from the destruction caused by the catastrophic hurricanes of the summer of 2005 by replacing the musical instruments lost or destroyed in the deluge. PHASE ONE
PHASE TWO is dedicated to helping churches and schools who were affected by the hurricanes to rebuild their music programs by replacing the instruments that they lost in the devastation.
Since starting Phase Two, we have already helped to give music to tens of thousands of Parishioners and Students in the region. But our work is far from finished. We are now initiating PHASE THREE of Music Rising dedicated to supporting Community Musical and Cultural Organizations and Events. This year, Music Rising played a large part in ensuring that the expenses were covered for the Mardi Gras Indians allowing them to afford to march. We intend to support similar groups who protect and promote the musical heritage of the region.
This is just brief please refer to my other blog or better yet the official web site for much more information
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
www.amnesty.org
Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all.
Our supporters are outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world - so we work to improve human rights through campaigning and international solidarity.
We have more than 2.2 million members and subscribers in more than 150 countries and regions and we coordinate this support to act for justice on a wide range of issues.
You can help make a real difference by becoming a member or supporter of Amnesty International.
CHERNOBYL CHILDREN
http://www.chernobyl.typepad.com/
Our work with the children of Belarus was featured in HBO's Academy-Award winning film, Chernobyl Heart.
A grassroots effort started in Ireland by Adi Roche's Chernobyl Children's Project International, we are now an international partnership movement of volunteers, professionals, businesses, governments and communities in Belarus, Ukraine, the United State and Ireland. We collaborate to overcome the domino affect of poverty, poor health, and social upheaval that makes it difficult for communities -- especially vulnerable children -- to move on with hope.
Chernobyl Children's Project International works in partnership with families and communities to support their recovery from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986.
Our largely volunteer organization works in partnership with the people of Belarus and Ukraine to form professional peer relationships and to help them overcome the domino effect of poverty, poor health, and social issues that continue to plague so many, even more than 20 years after the accident.
EDUN
www.edunonline.com
EDUN specialized in Organic Clothing, Graphic Tees, and Eco Clothing with a mission to drive sustainable employment in developing economics. The company was founded in 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono
Rita has more about this clothing company in her U2station blogs
APPAREL LESOTHO ALLIANCE TO FIGHT AIDS
http://www.alafa.info/Pages/Default.asp
The Lesotho apparel industry is the country's largest private sector employer, employing more than 40000 workers, mainly relatively unskilled women - about 85% of the workforce are women. Surveys within the sector show that 43% of the employees are HIV-positive.
Services are provided by a range of both non-government and private sector providers. Funding is assured through the brands (EDUM, Wal-mart, Gap Inc, Levi Strauss and retailer Nordsrom ), bilateral donors (DFID and Irish Aid) and multilateral donors (European Commission)
ALAFA uses a mix of different models, but the emerging best practice is an integrated approach with primary health clinics in or near the factory, and contractual arrangements with private doctors and nurses teaming up with factory-based peer educators, counselors and expert patients. The latter are workers on the program who have been recruited to help other workers adhere to their treatment.
That was a quick run through of this program so for the complete information of what they do and how they achieve it please go to the website.
