Arcade Fire criticise U2 and Oasis

Win Butler talks exclusively to NME

Arcade Fire have criticised the marketing strategies of band's like U2, Oasis and the Rolling Stones.

Speaking in the new issue of NME, frontman Win Butler had a go at bands who aggressively force feed their music to fans.

Butler said: "It's not like we shun success, but at the same time we don't want to shove it down people's throats. In the U.K. there's this kind of rock star competition.

"I don't know if U2 started it, or the Stones or Oasis but a lot of bands think in terms of: 'I'm going to be the biggest band in the world. F**k all those bands who've got no ambition.' I think that's a total crock of s**t.

"There's nothing less interesting to me than the idea of marketing the f**k out of something so people are forced to like it. Some bands are just manipulating people to buy music. That's how 90 percent of the record industry works! It's basically the same as selling a f**king toaster or a cruise package."

Ahh, capitalism at it's best. Chances are Mr. Butler slept on an advertised mattress, removed his advertised covers, showered with advertised soap and shampoo, drove in an advertised car, etc.

Here is something he may not know. When I fell in love with U2's music in 1980 I promoted, pushed, and shoved U2 music down people's throat because I believed in it and knew someday everyone would thank me for it! How's that for a blindside sock in the jaw? You are not even considering the U2, Oasis, and Rolling Stone fans that do their part to share, expose, spread and promote their favorite music. God help you if some of us work in radio! If you believe in something you may as well put your heart and soul into it. That's all we're doing here, trying to be the best we can be at what we do. Interestingly enough, the only way I would have ever heard of you and your work would be through a U2 website. :)

Sincerely,

AntsNurPants

OMG you have got to be kidding me, Win Butler!! You would be better off to THINK just a little before you speak and to be thanking U2 for YOUR band's success! Let's face it, if it weren't for U2's so called marketing style of "shove it down people's throats" Arcade Fire wouldn't even be on the map, let alone people's radar! You have U2 to thank for "marketing the f**k out of 'your band' so that people 'were' forced like it." In fact, if it weren't for U2 playing the song "Wake Up" as the last song over the PA system before they came on stage, during the entire course of the Vertigo World Tour, who would even know who Arcade Fire is, or for that matter even care? You've got a band who writes such morbid, negative songs that it would take a long, long time to reach people, long time, without advertising. I can't even believe what an ungrateful bonehead you are. You should really keep your mouth shut and be grateful that U2 didn't charge you any CASH for the free airplay and exposure Arcade Fire got at their shows. Your band could never afford the cost of that and it's because of that exposure you're as successful as you are. I'm sure you're just like everyone else in this world and aren't complaining about all the money you've made riding on the coat tails of U2. Please. Don't be so lame, disrespectful and dishonest with people. Next time I hear "Wake Up" I'm going to "throw up."
