Media Review:
Song Review: All I Want Is You
By Thomas Ward, All Music Guide
The concluding track to one of rock's more interesting failures, "All I Want Is You" is a fitting end to Rattle and Hum, and it's somewhat emblematic of the album - it tries too hard to make a big important statement, and ends up sounding awfully pretentious and misguided. "All I Want is You" is a conventional love song, built upon three chords and a conventional (but touching) melody. However, coming on the back of the indefensible "God Pt. 2", the sincerity of the song must be called into question - after all, this is a record in which the group try to tackle American music, and for any album this ambitious to end with a simple love song is certainly odd. Perhaps Bono was attempting to show the many sides of the group, but "All I Want Is You" feels like a rather routine love song in completely the wrong context.
