The first of two U2 concerts in Sydney took place tonight at the Sydney Cricket Ground, a venue U2 has never performed at (thanks to the fact that nearby Sydney Football Stadium is in the process of being demolished to make way for a new stadium). Michael Hutchence, the former lead singer of INXS, was the center of attention at tonight's show as U2 paid tribute with several portions of INXS songs including "Never Tear Us Apart" and "Devil Inside" (it was precisely 22 years ago to the day that Hutchence committed suicide). Later on, the band performed "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of", a song Bono wrote for Hutchence (and himself). The song replaced "Love Is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way", and was the first time it was not performed (aside from an abbreviated setlist in Berlin) since it made its debut in 2017. Another Australian band, Midnight Oil, was honored during "Bullet the Blue Sky", and Bono praised frontman Peter Garrett's environmental and social justice activism. During the chitchat after "In God's Country", Larry apologized for calling the drumbeat a foxtrot during his time in the Drifting Cowboys, as it was really a "waltz".
