-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- U2 - BEAUTIFUL DAY (4.06) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Track 01 of 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' Release Date: October 9th, 2000 1st single extracted from the album. Don't let it get away. Tab made by Michele Rossi with his acoustic guitar 'Washburn D-10 N' and Notepad. A mention for Michael Albert, who found the main verse chords, even if they are not symmetric, like it could appear: there's an extra Bm. Thanx to my brother Davide who found that out together with me. Well, no way out. When you listen to 'Beautiful Day' by U2, your heart goes boom. It's the most beautiful song in the album, not only for the melody but also for the fantastic and magic Edge's riffs. Big power and energy, with a 'German drum' in the intro (Bono called that so) and then an explosion of sounds, guitars, choirs, and, of course, the flexible voice of Bono. I think it's the best work in years and it'll become surely a big classic. Besides the video is very cool! It's really 'una bellissima giornata'. ;) ----------------- # Chords used # ----------------- A x02220 Bm x24432 D xx0232 G 320033 Em 022000 Note: Even if you can play the chords as above, it's easier playing the main verse (A Bm D G D A) shaking only the strings DGB: A* xx222x Bm* xx443x D* xx023x G* xx003x Anyway this is what Edge really plays during the chorus: A5 577xxx B5 799xxx D5 x577xx G5 355xxx playing of course A5 B5 D5 G5 D5 A5 shaking like a rocker! ;) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Edge plays three riffs along the song: 1. the MAIN VERSE RIFF (a lot of delay) 2. the CHORUS RIFF (the hysteric one...!) 3. the FINAL CHORUS RIFF ('What you don't have you don't...') The first of them (MAIN VERSE RIFF) isn't always the same. It changes four times. Of course you have to use a lot of delay to play like The Edge does. MAIN VERSE RIFF 1 ('You're out of luck...'; 'Someone you...') A Bm D G D A e|--------------------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------------------| G|--------11----------9--------11---------11--------------| D|--11----------12-------9--9--------9----------11--------| A|--------------------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------------------| MAIN VERSE RIFF 2 ('The traffic is stuck...'; 'You thought...') A Bm D G D A e|--------------------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------------------| G|--------9----------9----11-------9-------11-------------| D|--11----------12------------9-------9----------11-------| A|--------------------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------------------| Therefore, before the explosion of the 1st chorus, the order is: riff 1, riff 2, riff 2, riff 1 (this is symmetric!). Clear? A Bm D G The heart is a bloom D A Shoots up through the stony ground A Bm D G But there's no room D A No space to rent in this town A Bm D G You're out of luck D A And the reason that you had to care A Bm D G The traffic is stuck D A And you're not moving anywhere A Bm D G You thought you'd found a friend D A To take you out of this place [ a - w - a - y ]* A Bm D G Someone you could lend a hand D A In return for grace [a - w - a - y] A Bm D G It's a beautiful day [ d - a - y ] D A Sky falls and you feel like A Bm D G It's a beautiful day [ d - a - y ] D A Don't let it get away -------------------------------------------------------------------- MAIN VERSE RIFF 3 ('You're on the road...') A Bm D G D A e|--------------------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------------------| G|--------9----------9--------9--9-------11---------------| D|--11---------12-------9--9--------9----------11---------| A|--------------------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------------------| MAIN VERSE RIFF 4 ('You're in the mud...'; 'You love this town...'; 'You've been all...') A Bm D G D A e|--------------------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------------------| G|--------9--11---------9--11-------9-------11------------| D|--11-----------12------------9-------9----------11------| A|--------------------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------------------| So the 2nd main verse is: riff 3, riff 4, riff 4, riff 4. All right! -------------------------------------------------------------------- A Bm D G You're on the road D A But you've got no destination A Bm D G You're in the mud D A In the maze of her imagination A Bm D G You love this town D A Even if that doesn't ring true A Bm D G You've been all over D A And it's been all over you A Bm D G It's a beautiful day [ d - a - y ] D A Don't let it get away A Bm D G It's a beautiful day [ d - a - y ] D A Uhhhh Uhhhhhhh Uhh -------------------------------------------------------------------- CHORUS RIFF ('Touch me...'; etc.) e|---9--9--9--7--9----10-10-10-10-10-10----10-10-10--9-10-----9--7--9--9--7--9--7--| B|--10-10-10-10-10----10--8--8--8--8--8-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10--| G|---9--9--9--9--9--7--7--7--7--7--7--------7--7--7--7--7-----9--9--9--9--9--9--9--| D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------| A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------| E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------| A Bm D G Touch me D A Take me to that other place A Bm D G Teach me, love D A I know I'm not a hopeless case A Bm D G D A Em G See the world in green and blue D A See China right in front of you Em G See the canyons broken by cloud D A See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out Em G See the Bedouin fires at night D A See the oil fields at first light and Em G See the bird with a leaf in her mouth D A After the flood all the colours came out A Bm D G Da - a - aa - aaay D A Da - a - aa - ay A Bm D G It was beautiful day D A Don't let it get away A Bm D G D A Beautiful day A Bm D G Touch me D A Take me to that other place A Bm D G Reach me D A I know I'm not a hopeless case -------------------------------------------------------------------- FINAL CHORUS RIFF ('What you don't have you don't...') This riff was hard to write down. I had to use the 'karaoke' filter of my hi-fi to eliminate Bono's voice and listen better to the guitar. But it's very simple. A Bm D G D A e|--------------------------------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------------------------------| G|----11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--11--| D|--11--11--11--12--12--12--12--12--12--12--12--14--14--14--14--14----| A|--------------------------------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------------------------------| A Bm D G What you don't have you don't need it now D A What you don't know you can feel it somehow A Bm D G What you don't have you don't need it now D A Don't need it now A Bm D G D A It's a beautiful day A Bm D G D A [fading out] In live performances, Edge plays these last chords in this way: A Bm D G D A e|--------------------------------------------------------------------| B|------------------------------5-------------------------------------| G|---6----7----11----4----11----6-------------------------------------| D|---7----9----12----5----12----7-------------------------------------| A|---7----9----12----5----12----7-------------------------------------| E|---5----7----10----3----10------------------------------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------- *I can't understand if the backing vocals say "away", precisely, or if they say nothing which has some sense. But I think that the concordance between 'out of this place' and 'away' is meaningful, so... let's take it! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Music: U2 Lyrics: Bono Synthesizers/programming: Brian Eno Backing vocals: The Edge and Daniel Lanois Produced by: Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno Engineered by: Richard Rainey Assisted by: Chris Heaney Additional production by: Steve Lillywhite Mixed by: Steve Lillywhite Additional engineering: Tim Palmer and Stephen Harris Don't worry... it's a beautiful day!
