I hold this as an historic date in my musical appreciation of Rock 'N Roll. I was able see U2 for the very first time. They did not disappoint. The small-ish venue of The Atlanta Civic Center, est. 4 to 5,000 capacity was jammed and rockin that summer late spring night.
The opening act was 'The Alarm' who at the time I considered kind of a "U2 Jr" with their rebellious lyrics and stage act. They were very impressive also and that was only time I was able to seem perform live.
For U2, it was definitely the 'Raise the White Flag', anti-War, Bono strutting around and singing passionately performance. What I remember most is that is the only time I would be able to hear them perform most all of the songs from 'Boy'. Electric Co., Another Time, Another Place , Out of Control were incredible. It was basically the same set they did at 'Live from Red Rocks' show.
Biggest memory is probably the stinging guitar leads by the Edge and of course Bono running around in his sleeveless U2/War black t-shirt carrying around the large pole with the white flag and posting it into the crowd at the stage's edge. I still have my ticket stub and a t-shirt with the 'Boy' picture on it.
Great, incredible night indeed.
