Remarks:

U2 blast off the 2nd leg of the Experience + Innocence Tour in Berlin, Germany on the final day of August 2018. To start off the show, U2 performed “The Blackout”, but not before a heavily modified introduction using “Love Is All We Have Left” and the Babel introduction to “Zooropa”, all reverberating to MRI imagery, archival war footage from the early 20th century as well as Charles Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” (with “I’m Sorry” repeating over the mix). As the setlist continued, most of the songs performed on the first leg of the tour in North America were once again played at tonight’s show, only with a more European message and the blue EU flag proudly displayed (as opposed to the American flag). Speaking of flags, “Red Flag Day” was performed for the 5th time on the tour, and for its tour debut, the Fish Out of Water mix of “Even Better Than the Real Thing” was performed, replacing “Desire” in the setlist. When it was time for Bono’s alter ego of MacPhisto to take over the show, he had rather a lot on his mind: “Don’t look at me. Look at you, Berlin. You don’t know what you’ve got, do you? This city — so old, so new, so wonderful — and it’s yours. It’s not anyone else’s. You don’t have to share it with people you don’t know. You don’t have to share it with foreigners. Maybe tourists. Foreigners — I’m just back from America. It’s full of foreigners. Everyone’s a foreigner. But the good news is The Donald is on top of the situation. You could do with someone like that around here, and you have one come to think of it. What’s her name? A, no no not Angela. I know her initials. AfD. Alternative für Demokratie. Initials are important. Mine’s an M. MacPhisto. Not McDonald. I was a handsome devil some say. I still am. And, Berlin … one last thing: it’s when you don’t believe that I exist, that’s when I do my best work.” Also, instead of “Staring at the Sun”, U2 played “Summer of Love” in an acoustic fashion (and only the second appearance on the tour). Finally, instead of playing “American Soul”, U2 chose to play “New Year’s Day” in an early 1980’s style with more keyboard parts, drum pauses, and backing vocals.
