Remarks:
New York City hosts U2 for the first of 8 shows at Madison Square Garden. Prior to "Iris", Bono exclaims: "Welcome to innocence and experience. When we first played a club called The Ritz in this great city, we thought of ourselves as a great punk band. We still do. A band of equals with an audience of equals." Nelson Mandela is honored with "Ordinary Love" as this would have been his 97th birthday. The big surprise is the first performance of "October" in nearly 26 years, last played live on November 11, 1989. Longtime U2 friend Salman Rushdie, who is at the show, is also saluted for "One" and Bono praises the people of New York who have survived and lived through terrorism and security threats. Other celebrities spotted at the show were New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Christy Turlington, Spike Jonze, Mario Batali, Jon Bon Jovi, Harry Belafonte and many more.
